Ask Mick Slattery of Slattery’s Citgo in Elm Grove and Bob Schiek of Schiek’s Amoco in Hales Corners what their favorite summertime pastime is, and both will respond with a resounding “Golf.” Ask them what golfing experience brings them the most pride and joy, and both will respond with a resounding “MACC Fund Outing – helping kids with cancer.”

Since 1983 Mick and Bob have put much time and effort into organizing an annual outing to benefit the MACC Fund (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer) and research into the effective treatment and cure of pediatric cancers.

The Car Care for MACC Open, formerly known as the BP Amoco Dealers Outing for the MACC Fund has since evolved into the Car Care for MACC Open. Its evolution expanded the outings’ reach into the automotive care industry and brings over 130 golfers together each August to enjoy a pristine course at Tuckaway Country Club in Franklin, as well as exceptional food, service and above all, the opportunity to have a “good time for a good cause.” 2003 marks the 20th Anniversary of the outing, bringing its grand total donation to the MACC Fund to well over $750,000 NET dollars.

John Cary, executive director of the MACC Fund remembers fondly the early years with the BP Amoco Dealers and shares the same enthusiasm with Mick and Bob in 1983 now in 2003, supporting critical pediatric cancer research so someday children won’t have to face such a diagnosis. “It takes a good heart and a great deal of personal motivation to put on an event of this caliber for 20 years. The MACC Fund and children with cancer are ever grateful to the Car Care for MACC Open planning committee, their faithful golfers and generous sponsors for their tireless efforts to help a child with cancer.”

In honor of the 20th Anniversary of the Outing, a young cancer survivor, Tim Baggott, will join the group for a great day of golf. “Tim’s presence will certainly add a touch of reality to what we are doing – we can look at him and know our efforts over the past 20 years have touched lives,” said Mick Slattery. “It’s 20 years of hard work and perseverance coming full-circle.”
