High School Golfers Raise Money to Fight Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders

On Saturday, April 24th, approximately 144 high school golfers from around southeastern Wisconsin will gather at the Brown Deer Golf Course to compete in an exceptionally unique golf tournament. These young golfers are not only competing against each other on the links, they are competing for a chance to play with Mark Wilson, winner of the 2009 Mayakoba Golf Classic and long-time friend and supporter of the MACC Fund.

While Mark is a huge proponent of high school golf programs and works with high school players often, what’s unique here is that the opportunity to play with Mark Wilson has nothing to do with the players’ scores on the course on April 24th.

Before the first ball is teed up, before the first eagle is made, the Lake Country Charity golf teams raise money in support of the MACC Fund. Teams that raise $1,000 or more get their names thrown into a hat for the chance to play with Mark Wilson. The more they raise, the more chances they get.

Now in its fourth year, Arrowhead Golf Coach and Tournament Organizer, Tom Tallmadge is fearful that the economy may make it difficult to reach the Lake Country tournament’s goal of $40,000. The last three tournaments have raised over $115,000 for the MACC Fund.

Tom remains hopeful that the community and sponsors who have given so generously in the past will remain steadfast in their support of the tournament. "We know the area and the country is going through some tough economic times, but we’re still hoping that the purpose of the tournament drives its success…we are raising money to fight childhood cancer," Tallmadge stated.

Many of the State's top 10 teams will be competing in the tourney. "We welcome everyone to join us in helping eradicate childhood cancers and related blood disorders. Every dollar counts. Our greatest hope is that some day the kids with cancer we’ve met along the way will be joining us out on the links." Tallmadge has said.
