September 2010 - Summer Events Support
MACC Fund's Gift of Hope
Dear Friends:
The summer of 2010 has given way to fall. While many will remember it for record rains and flooding, the MACC Fund will remember it with gratitude for the thousands of people who helped raise funds for the MACC Fund’s "Gift of Hope" through research.
The Chili’s MACC Open kicked off the 2010 MACC Fund Golf Tour followed by an additional 17 outings this year, with proceeds from the Tour in excess of $600,000. The 21st annual TREK 100 Ride for Hope was held on June 12 in Waterloo, home of Trek Bicycle Corp., the world’s leading manufacturer of high-end bicycles with over 2,500 riders and volunteers enjoying the beautiful Wisconsin countryside riding from 19 to 100 miles. The TREK 100 is the MACC Fund's largest fundraiser, having raised over $9 million and thousands of miles of smiles in the past 21 years.
Women for MACC’s 20th annual "Shoot for a Cure" sponsored by the Hartford Gun and Conservation Club in late August brought the event's total contributions to over $1 million.
A block party on Burleigh and North 79th Streets held in honor of a neighborhood child recently diagnosed with cancer, lemonade stands, birthday parties and a variety of other activities sponsored by caring groups all added up to a summer of hope for children with cancer and blood disorders.
The funds were put to good use supporting state-of-the art scientific and translational research into the effective treatment of cancer and related blood disorders like sickle cell disease and aplastic anemia. Cancer remains the leading disease-related cause of death in children after the newborn period. The MACC Fund will distribute $2.1 million to its beneficiaries through September, 2010 en route to a total of $2.8 million in annual support. The current gifts through September include:
$1.15 million to the Medical College of Wisconsin toward its annual budget for pediatric oncology, hematology, and bone marrow transplant research conducted in the College’s MACC Fund Research Center.
$375,000 semi-annual gift to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin toward the MACC Fund's $5 million commitment for translational research in the MACC Fund Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.
$320,000 to the University of Wisconsin’s Carbone Cancer Center to fund five research grants, with research conducted in the MACC Fund Childhood Cancer Research Wing of the Wisconsin Interdisciplinary Medical Research (WIMR) Center.
$250,000 to the Medical College of Wisconsin to complete the $1 million pledge made in 2006 for the "Translational Studies of Tumor Cell-Based Vaccines" research project.
Since its inception in 1976, the MACC Fund has contributed $38 million to pediatric cancer and blood disorder research, playing an important role in helping to raise the overall cure rate for childhood cancer from 20% to 80% during this time.
Thanks to the partnership of the MACC Fund’s generous sponsors, donors, participants and volunteers, the summer of 2010 truly was a "Summer of Hope" for children battling cancer and related blood disorders. October provides opportunities to help as well with the Bob & Brian Plane Pull presented by Frontier Airlines and Laacke & Joys on October 2, the 34th Annual Bucks MACC Game on featuring the Chili’s Pregame KidsFest on October 22 and Women for MACC’s Couture for a Cure on October 28 at the Hyatt.
