I had the good fortune to start the MACC Fund with my friend Eddie Doucette back in 1976. Eddie was the Milwaukee Bucks radio announcer and followed my every move on the court. In 1975, tragedy struck the Doucette family. Eddie's two-year-old son, Brett, was diagnosed with cancer. Both Eddie and I wanted to do something to help Brett and other kids like him, so, when I retired from professional basketball, Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer was born. Next to my family and my faith, nothing, including my number being retired by the Bucks, has meant more to me than starting this organization.
When I reflect upon the MACC Fund today, it reminds me of the hard work and dedication it took for the Bucks to win the NBA World Championship in 1971. We had two of the greatest players to ever lace ‘em up — Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Oscar Robertson — but their talents weren’t enough to ensure victory. They needed 3 other players on the court to win the title, plus a supporting cast of reserves, coaches and a trainer. That’s the role of the MACC Fund in the fight against childhood cancer and related blood disorders. Our work provides "stars" in the oncology and hematology research community with the financial support they need to be successful.
How successful? Thanks to tens of thousands of donors, sponsors, corporate citizens, athletic participants and volunteers, the MACC Fund has contributed $33 million for pediatric cancer and related blood disorder research with long-term commitments taking that total to $39 million. Those generous donations have helped yield significant advances in overall cure rates to 80% with some as high as 90% with previously deadly cancers.
The fight, however, is far from won, and plenty of stories urge on our work. A parent whose teenage child died recently remarked that:
"There is no way that she would have been able to live as long without the research supported by the MACC Fund. Without the research, we would have lost her, maybe at age 6. I owe those years of my daughter’s life to those people."
We can think of no greater testament to her life than committing ourselves to working even harder to ensure that other children aren’t lost.
Thanks for taking the time to visit our website, and please take a moment to join us in offering a "Gift of Hope" to children with cancer.
Sincerely,
Jon McGlocklin
President, MACC Fund
